Chaos is a reference to the nature of processes that are used in the creation of sculpture. It also refers to the seeming mess in the studio during the sculpture making processes. Chaos, in traditional usage, refers to the unorganized state of primordial matter before the creation of distinct form. Bruning used the chaos of fire in metal casting, welding, and in the ceramic kiln to transform matter into sculpture.
Although the transformation of matter is essential in the creation process, it is the artist’s personal vision that directs the outcome of the chaos. It’s the mix and match of figurative and abstract forms that direct the sculptor out of chaos.

Bold and exciting are words that describe vigorous physical exercise. These words also describe the mural design on the side of the handball courts. The design defines the purpose of the handball courts–a game that uses confined space and a ball moving at high velocity.
The mural shows a cupped hand in an illusionistic space slapping at a ball that radiates with speed as it flies across the court. The flight and power of the ball’s movement is accentuated by multiple overlapping rings of color. The pattern on the floor of the court is borrowed from the soles of a handball shoe.
